Before Installation: Container Inspection and Preparation

Container preparation before liner installation is as important as the installation procedure itself. A liner installed in an improperly prepared container will not achieve its intended function cargo protection and containment regardless of how correctly the liner itself is fitted.

Container inspection checklist

Structural integrity: Check all six faces (floor, four walls, roof) for holes, rust-through, or significant damage. Even small holes in the container allow moisture ingress that bypasses the liner’s moisture barrier function at the hole location.

Door seal condition: Inspect the rubber door seals for cracking, compression set, or damage. The liner exits through the container doors, and poor door seal condition can allow moisture ingress around the liner despite the liner itself being intact.

Previous cargo residue: Any residue from previous cargo that could contaminate the current cargo must be cleaned out before liner installation. For food-grade cargo, verify that previous cargo was compatible and that the container has been cleaned to food-grade standard.

Step 1 : Position the Liner at the Container Entrance

Identifying liner orientation

Before attempting to insert the liner, identify the discharge spout the fabric tube or opening built into the liner end that will be routed through the container door for cargo discharge. This end goes toward the container doors. The liner may also have suspension loops or attachment straps along its length these will be used in Step 3 to secure the liner to the container roof fittings.

Position the folded liner on the ground immediately in front of the container door opening, with the discharge spout end closest to the door. Step 2 : Unfold and Insert the Liner Into the Container

With 2–3 operators, begin feeding the liner into the container from the door end. One operator remains outside to guide the liner and prevent it from folding or twisting during insertion; the other operator(s) enter the container to pull the liner forward and position it against the container walls.

Insertion technique

Feed the closed base end of the liner into the container first pushing it toward the closed end while the discharge spout end is held outside the container.

As the liner is fed in, the operator inside the container pulls it forward while simultaneously pressing the liner against the container floor and walls to prevent bunching in the centre of the container floor.

Continue feeding until the liner base is pressed into the rear corner of the container interior. At this point, the bulk of the liner should be inside the container with the discharge spout tube still extending outside through the door opening.

Unfold the liner fully inside the container pressing the sidewall sections flat against the container walls and the floor section flat against the container floor. The liner should cover all six interior surfaces (floor, four walls, and ideally extending onto the ceiling/roof) without significant bunching or folding.

UAE Summer Heat Warning

In UAE summer conditions, container interiors in direct sun reach 60–70°C dangerous working temperatures. Schedule liner installation during early morning hours (before 8am) or use a shaded container bay. Never work inside a sun-heated container without adequate ventilation and heat monitoring.

Step 3 : Secure the Liner to the Container Structure

An unsecured liner will be displaced by the weight and flow of cargo during loading bunching at the bottom and pulling away from the walls, leaving sections of container interior exposed and reducing effective cargo volume. Correct securing prevents this movement and maintains the liner in full-coverage position throughout loading.

Securing methods

Suspension loops to roof fittings: Most professional PVC container liners have suspension loops along the top edges that hook onto the container’s interior roof fittings (the standard timber or metal batten attachments present in most ISO containers). Hook all suspension loops to secure the liner top edge and prevent it pulling away from the roof during loading.

Adhesive tape at door edges: Use container liner tape to secure the liner edges to the container door frame and adjacent walls at the door end preventing the liner from being pulled back through the door during loading or from allowing cargo to bypass the liner at the door zone.

Corner securing: Press the liner firmly into the four rear interior corners and secure with tape or the liner’s built-in corner attachment if provided. Unsecured corners are the most common location for liner displacement during cargo loading.

Step 4 : Position the Discharge Spout

The discharge spout the fabric tube that extends from the liner through the container door must be correctly positioned and secured before loading begins. Its position determines whether cargo discharge is controlled and complete, or partial and wasteful.

Spout positioning for gravity discharge

For standard gravity-discharge liners, the spout should exit through the lower portion of the door opening ideally through the gap between the container floor and the lower edge of the closed door. Route the spout through this gap and seal the gap between the spout and door frame with tape to prevent cargo from bypassing the spout during discharge.

The spout end should be tied closed (with the provided tie cord or similar) during shipping the tie prevents premature opening during transit but must be accessible for quick release at the discharge destination in UAE.

Step 5 : Loading and Sealing

With the liner fully installed, secured, and the discharge spout correctly positioned, the container is ready for bulk cargo loading. Bulk loading through the container door opening (by conveyor, pneumatic blower, or gravity chute) fills the liner directly the liner expands to accommodate the cargo volume as it fills, pressing against the container walls under the cargo weight.

Loading rate and liner integrity

Do not load faster than the liner can expand and settle rapid loading can create localised pressure that stresses the liner seams at the leading edge of the cargo fill. For pneumatic loading systems, verify that the liner is rated for the pressure generated by the loading system; standard PVC liner materials are adequate for gravity and moderate pneumatic loading but may require reinforced construction for high-pressure pneumatic systems.

Sealing after loading

Once loading is complete, seal the liner opening at the top using the tie cord, adhesive tape, or heat sealing (for liner designs that support this) to prevent cargo movement during transit and moisture ingress through the open top. Position the container over or adjacent to the reception hopper, conveyor, or collection point

Open the container doors and access the discharge spout

Position the spout end over the reception point

Release the spout tie cord cargo flows by gravity through the spout into the reception system

For complete discharge, tilt the container slightly toward the door end if the site has tilting equipment (reduces residual cargo in the liner to near-zero)

After discharge, remove the liner from the container inspect for damage and either dispose of or prepare for reuse (if the liner design supports reuse)
