In the UAE tent and canopy manufacturing industry, the term keder fabric refers to PVC coated fabric panels that have been finished with a keder rope welded or sewn into a hem channel around their perimeter ready to slide into a matching C-channel aluminium rail on a tent or canopy frame structure. The keder rope hem transforms a flat PVC fabric panel into a complete, frame-ready tent or canopy component. Understanding keder fabric how the keder hem is produced, which rope diameter to specify for a given application, and which PVC fabric weight is correct for UAE wind and UV conditions is fundamental knowledge for UAE tent manufacturers and tensile canopy fabricators.

Watad Al Khaima supplies keder rope and PVC coated fabric for keder hem production in the UAE alongside aluminium frame profiles and C-channel keder rail, enabling complete tent and canopy panel supply from a single Dubai source.

What Is Keder Fabric?

Keder fabric is PVC coated tent or canopy fabric with a keder rope integrated into its perimeter hem. The keder rope a round PVC-coated rope ranging from 6mm to 20mm in diameter is welded or sewn into a folded hem channel at the edge of each fabric panel. Once fitted, the rope creates an enlarged, rounded bead at the fabric edge that can be slid into the slot of a matching C-channel aluminium keder rail fixed to the tent or canopy frame.

The keder system is the standard professional fabric attachment method for UAE event tents, car park canopies, warehouse structures, and tensile shade canopies replacing the eyelets and lacing ropes used in basic tent construction with a continuous, sealed, load-distributing connection that performs significantly better under UAE wind conditions and provides the clean professional appearance required for UAE hospitality and corporate event structures.

For a full explanation of the keder rail system mechanics, see our keder rail system UAE guide.

How the Keder Hem Is Produced

The keder hem is produced at the tent manufacturer’s factory as part of the panel fabrication process not on site. Two production methods are used in UAE tent manufacturing:

HF-welded keder hem (professional standard): The PVC fabric panel edge is folded over the keder rope and the overlapping fabric layers are high-frequency welded closed, encapsulating the rope in a welded hem channel. HF welding produces a waterproof, high-peel-strength hem that is stronger than the surrounding fabric. The HF-welded keder hem is the production standard for UAE professional event tent and hospitality pavilion manufacturing it produces the cleanest appearance and highest attachment strength.

Sewn keder hem: The fabric edge is folded over the rope and the hem is closed by sewing. Simpler to produce without HF welding equipment, but the needle perforations reduce waterproofing at the hem seam and sewn hems have lower peel strength than welded hems under sustained wind load. Acceptable for HDPE shade fabric applications where waterproofing is not required; not recommended for PVC tent fabric where seam waterproofing and maximum hem strength are required.

For HF welding equipment used in keder hem production, see our high frequency welding machine Dubai guide.

Keder Rope Size Selection for UAE Applications

Keder Rope Ø PVC Fabric Weight Typical UAE Application Rail Slot Width
8mm 450–650 gsm Light event tents, car park shade canopies 6mm slot
10mm 650–800 gsm Standard event tents, hospitality pavilions 7–8mm slot
12mm 800–950 gsm Semi-permanent tents, industrial shelters 8–9mm slot
16mm 900–1050 gsm Warehouse tent structures, large industrial 11–12mm slot

Matching rope diameter to both fabric weight and rail slot width is critical undersized rope in an oversized rail slot will pull through under wind loading; oversized rope in an undersized rail will bind during panel installation and can damage the hem seam. In UAE warehouse tent and large industrial applications where wind loading is significant, erring toward a larger rope diameter than the minimum provides additional pull-out resistance.

PVC Fabric Weight Selection for Keder Applications

The PVC fabric weight for keder panel applications is determined by the structural demands of the application and the UAE service life required:

650–750 gsm (acrylic top coat): Light event tent panels and hospitality pavilion wall panels in temporary applications the lower weight allows fast panel installation. UAE service life 5–8 years in sheltered installations. FR-certified grades available for Dubai Civil Defence permit compliance.

750–850 gsm (acrylic or PVDF top coat): Standard event tent and semi-permanent canopy panels the most widely used weight range for UAE tent manufacturing. PVDF top coat specified for permanent or frequently re-erected structures where UV resistance and surface cleanability over a 10+ year service life justify the additional cost.

850–950 gsm (PVDF top coat): Semi-permanent and industrial tent cladding panels heavier fabric for larger panel spans and higher wind load design. UAE service life 10–15 years with PVDF top coat in permanent installations.

950–1050 gsm (PVDF top coat): Warehouse tent structure cladding the heaviest structural tent fabric, for large-span panels carrying full UAE design wind load. Keder rope 16mm minimum for this fabric weight.

UAE Applications for Keder Fabric

Event tent panels: UAE commercial event tents from the 10m × 10m clear-span party tent to the 50m × 100m air-conditioned gala dinner pavilion use keder-hemmed PVC roof and wall panels as their primary cladding. The keder connection provides the sealed, professional appearance required for high-end UAE hospitality events. See our tents UAE guide.

Car parking shade canopies: Car park shade canopy panels use keder fabric attachment PVC or HDPE fabric panels with 8mm keder rope slide into the C-channel rails on the aluminium purlin structure. See our car parking shade fabric UAE guide.

Warehouse tent cladding: The side wall and roof cladding panels of UAE semi-permanent warehouse structures are keder-hemmed PVC panels allowing individual panel removal and replacement without dismantling the primary structure. See our warehouse tents Dubai guide.

Walkway and entrance canopies: Building entrance canopies and covered walkways in UAE commercial and hospitality developments use keder-hemmed PVC panels for the clean, sealed appearance required in public-facing architectural applications.

Tensile fabric structures: Architectural tensile membrane structures in UAE public spaces use keder connection at the membrane-to-frame junction the keder edge detail is the standard connection for tensioned membranes attached to aluminium perimeter beams. See our tensile fabric structures UAE guide.

Keder Fabric vs Eyelet-Edged Fabric: When to Use Each

UAE tent and canopy manufacturers use keder-hemmed fabric for professional frame-attached panel connections and eyelet-edged fabric for laced or strap-attached applications:

Keder fabric is correct when: The panel attaches to a C-channel rail on an aluminium or steel frame event tents, tensile canopies, warehouse structures, car park canopy systems. Keder provides faster installation (slide vs lace), better load distribution, and a sealed connection that performs better under UAE wind loading.

Eyelet-edged fabric is correct when: The fabric is attached by lacing rope, tie-down straps, ratchet straps, or bungee cords truck tarpaulins, site cover tarpaulins, HDPE shade netting without a rail frame. See our eyelets product page for eyelet specification guidance.

Performance Under UAE Wind and Thermal Conditions

Keder fabric performance under UAE conditions depends on the correct specification of both rope diameter and fabric weight for the wind loads and UV conditions of the installation:

Wind loading: Dubai design wind speed of 38 m/s generates significant pull-out force at the keder rope–rail interface. Undersized keder rope (below the minimum for the fabric weight) can pull through the rail slot under peak UAE gust loading specifying the correct rope diameter is critical for UAE wind zone applications

Thermal cycling: UAE temperatures cycle from 20°C overnight to 55°C+ under summer afternoon sun. PVC keder rope expands and contracts with this temperature change correctly matched rope and rail slot dimensions must allow for thermal expansion without binding (tight at summer temperatures) or excessive play (loose in winter)

UV degradation: The keder rope hem is continuously exposed to UAE solar UV PVC-coated keder rope with UV stabilisation maintains rope flexibility and prevents surface cracking over the fabric service life. Non-stabilised rope degrades and becomes brittle, increasing the risk of rope fracture at the hem entry point during repeated tent assembly and disassembly cycles
