High frequency welding also called radio frequency (RF) welding or dielectric welding uses electromagnetic energy at 27.12 MHz to heat and fuse thermoplastic materials from within. The process works because PVC, as a polar thermoplastic, absorbs electromagnetic energy in the radio frequency range and converts it to heat through molecular friction. When two PVC fabric layers are placed between a shaped electrode and a metal platen and subjected to RF energy under pressure, both layers heat simultaneously from within the PVC compound at the interface melts and fuses, and the joint cools under pressure to form a continuous, homogeneous weld through the full depth of the compound layer.
