PVC coated fabric polyester scrim reinforced with a polyvinyl chloride compound on both faces is the most widely used technical textile in the UAE’s industrial, events, construction, and shading industries. Every professional tent, truck tarpaulin, tensile canopy, and industrial cover manufactured in the UAE is made from PVC coated fabric. Its combination of UV resistance, tear strength, waterproofing, weldability, and fire retardancy certification availability makes it the only material that meets the full requirement set of demanding UAE outdoor fabric applications.
Watad Al Khaima is a specialist supplier of PVC coated fabric rolls across the UAE and Middle East stocking the full grade range from 500 gsm to 1050 gsm, in standard and FR specifications, with full technical documentation for every order.
What Is PVC Coated Fabric?
PVC coated fabric is a composite material a woven polyester scrim (the structural reinforcement layer) is coated on both faces with a PVC compound (plasticised polyvinyl chloride), then finished with a top coat that determines the fabric’s surface durability and UV performance. The three-layer construction produces a material that combines the dimensional stability and tensile strength of the woven polyester scrim with the waterproofing, chemical resistance, and weldability of the PVC compound.
The key parameters that define a PVC coated fabric specification are:
Total weight (gsm): The combined weight of scrim, PVC compound, and top coat the most commonly referenced summary specification. Higher gsm indicates more PVC compound content and generally higher physical performance.
Scrim specification (dtex and count): The yarn linear density and thread count of the woven reinforcement layer determines tear resistance and dimensional stability. See our scrim specification guide.
Top coat type: Acrylic or PVDF determines UV resistance, self-cleaning performance, and service life in UAE conditions. See our PVDF vs acrylic guide.
Fire retardancy: Inherent FR (built into the PVC compound) or topical FR treatment determines certificate type and durability of fire retardant performance over the fabric’s service life.
PVC Coated Fabric Grades Available in the UAE
| Weight | Typical Application | UAE Service Life |
|---|---|---|
| 500–600 gsm | Decorative liners, light canopies | 3–5 years |
| 650–750 gsm | Event tents, shade sails, standard tarpaulins | 5–10 years |
| 800–900 gsm | Tensile structures, heavy tarpaulins | 8–15 years (PVDF) |
| 900–1050 gsm | Truck tarpaulins, industrial tents | 5–8 years (daily use) |
For guidance on choosing the right weight for your application, see our fabric selection guide and price guide. For fabric quality comparison across supply origins, see our European vs Asian PVC fabric guide.
Top Coat Options: Acrylic vs PVDF for UAE Conditions
The top coat applied over the PVC compound determines how the fabric surface performs against the UAE’s primary degradation mechanism UV radiation at intensities 30–40% higher than northern European levels. The two main options are:
Acrylic top coat: The standard commercial specification provides good UV resistance with 7–12 year service life in UAE conditions for correctly specified weights. Suitable for event tent fleets, standard commercial tarpaulins, and most non-architectural tensile structures. Lower cost than PVDF.
PVDF top coat (polyvinylidene fluoride): The premium architectural specification delivers 12–18 year UAE service life, superior self-cleaning in Dubai’s dusty environment (soiling washes off in rain rather than accumulating), and colour stability across the full service period. Specified for permanent tensile structures, architectural membrane roofs, and any installation where appearance across a long service life is a project requirement.

Fire Retardant PVC Coated Fabric: UAE Requirements
Fire retardant (FR) PVC coated fabric is mandatory for any public assembly structure in the UAE event tents, hospitality canopies, covered walkways, and any fabric structure where people congregate. As detailed in our FR compliance guide, the accepted standard is DIN 4102 B1, with certificates required to be current, product-specific, and from an accredited laboratory.
Watad Al Khaima provides current FR certificates with all FR-grade PVC coated fabric orders eliminating the documentation delays that arise when buyers source uncertified fabric and attempt to obtain certification retrospectively. FR certificates are product-specific by GSM and construction the certificate for a 750 gsm acrylic fabric does not cover an 850 gsm PVDF fabric, even from the same manufacturer.
Applications of PVC Coated Fabric in the UAE
Event and exhibition tents: 650–800 gsm FR-certified fabric for the UAE’s year-round events sector. See our event tent guide.
Tensile shade structures: 750–900 gsm PVDF-coated fabric for permanent car park canopies and architectural membranes. See our tensile structures guide.
Industrial tents: 850–1050 gsm for heavy-duty site shelter and equipment storage. See our industrial tent guide.
Truck tarpaulins: 900–1050 gsm high-duty-cycle tarpaulins for UAE logistics operations. See our truck tarpaulin guide.
Tarpaulin sheets: 650–850 gsm for cargo, site, and storage protection. See our tarpaulin sheets guide.
Blackout fabric: Specialist PVC coated fabric with light-blocking layers for event production and cinema. See our blackout fabric guide.
PVC water liner: Specialist formulation PVC fabric for water containment. See our water liner guide.
Keder fabric systems: PVC coated fabric with factory-welded keder rope edges for frame attachment. See our keder fabric guide.
Fabrication: Welding, Cutting and Joining PVC Coated Fabric
PVC coated fabric is fabricated by cutting and joining panels using high-frequency (HF) welding the industry-standard joining method for professional tent and tarpaulin manufacturing. As covered in our joining methods guide, HF welding produces waterproof seams as strong as the parent fabric essential for any UAE application where seam integrity under rain and wind loading must be guaranteed.
Watad Al Khaima supplies HF welding machines and all associated fabrication consumables FEP release film, PVC adhesive for repair and bonding alongside the fabric rolls, enabling buyers to procure their complete fabrication material requirement from a single UAE supplier.
UAE Supply : Stock, Widths and Lead Times
